Why should you focus on building your core strength?

Regular core stability exercise can improve back muscles and posture, and bring numerous benefits, including an improvement to swimming cycling and running.

What is core stability?

Core stability is all about having the ability to control the position and movement of the central part of your body. It is possible to train the trunk and target those muscles deep within the abdomen which connect to the spine, pelvis and shoulders – muscles which all assist in the maintenance of good posture and balance and provide the foundation for more efficient and better coordinated movement.

Benefits of core strength training include:

Improved balance – balance is an important factor for a runner in all situations, but especially when running off-road in rough terrain
Better posture – the core muscles play a major role in improving posture, which in turn will improve your running technique which will in turn further reduce the chance of injury.
Improved efficiency – you will be more comfortable in your stride and more efficient which means you will increase your endurance potential and not get so tired
Increased stability – a more stable frame will result in less wear-and-tear on muscles, further reducing injury risk
Improved joint and body stability
• Increased core strength
• Reduced risk of injury
• Improved sporting performance

How does this relate to triathletes and cyclists?

Think of the mechanics involved in cycling for example. The human body uses all
the muscles of the triathlete’s legs working together to produce the pedaling
motion. But look at the other muscle groups that are engaged. The entire core is providing stabilization and is actively recruited especially when the triathlete is in the aero position.

• Improved joint stability equals more power transfer cycling, less fatigue whilst swimming, and better posture and ability to hold technique and form running
• Less build up of lactic acid from muscles not working against one another as much
• A more efficient and even pedal stroke

The upper back, shoulders and arms also work synergistically to maintain body position on the handlebars. Now think of the joints involved. The ones that involve multi-planar movements such as the hips and shoulders as well as those that have uni-planar movements such as the knees, ankles and elbows.
